Anthropic launches Cowork, a Claude Desktop agent that works in your files — no coding required
Anthropic released Cowork on Monday, a new AI agent capability that extends the power of its widely used Claude Code tool to non-technical users. Unlike Claude Code, which targets developers, Cowork is designed to work directly inside your existing files — documents, spreadsheets, local folders — through the Claude Desktop app, with no terminal or programming knowledge required.
The move signals a deliberate push by Anthropic beyond the developer audience it has cultivated with Claude Code, aiming to put autonomous file-editing AI in the hands of writers, analysts, and knowledge workers who have never touched a command line. It is currently available as a research preview, giving Anthropic room to iterate before a broader rollout.

Europe's AI labeling and transparency rules are now in effect
The European Union's new transparency obligations under the AI Act came into force on August 2nd, requiring companies to disclose when users are interacting with a chatbot, and to clearly label AI-generated deepfakes and synthetic media. The rules mark one of the first binding regulatory milestones under the bloc's sweeping AI Act framework, and they apply broadly to products and services offered to EU residents — meaning global AI developers will need to comply or risk exclusion from one of the world's largest markets.
